I need to surrender my guinea pig. What do I do?

We understand that surrendering your guinea pig is a difficult decision. At Sunshine Piggy Rescue of Florida, we provide a loving and caring environment to ensure your pet finds the perfect forever home. Due to our current capacity, we are full at the moment, but we will add your guinea pig to our waitlist and reach out as space becomes available.

What should I bring when surrendering my guinea pig?

Please bring any belongings your guinea pig may have, such as their favourite toys, bedding, and a small amount of their current food.

Will my guinea pig be adopted quickly?

We strive to find the perfect forever home for each guinea pig as quickly as possible. However, the time it takes can vary based on individual needs and circumstances.

Our Surrender Process

Surrender Fee

There is a $10 fee per guinea pig, which helps cover initial intake costs, including fresh veggies, pellets, and hay.

Intake Process

Once surrendered, your guinea pig(s) will go through our intake process, which includes:

  • Initial intake quarantine where they are monitored for any health or behavioral concerns
  • Health evaluation to check for any medical needs
  • Temperament assessment to determine their socialization level and needs
  • Quarantine period which usually lasts one to two weeks but may vary depending on their condition
  • If cleared, they will be placed in one of our approved foster homes until adopted

What to Expect Once Your Guinea Pigs Are Surrendered

  • During quarantine, we will monitor them closely for any signs of illness or behavioral concerns
  • If any medical issues arise, we provide the necessary care and vet support
  • Once cleared, they will transition to a foster home where they will receive continued care and socialization
  • Our team works on finding them a suitable and loving adoptive home
  • We carefully screen all potential adopters to ensure the best match for each guinea pig

What Type of Homes We Look For

  • Bonded guinea pigs are not separated unless it is a safety concern for one of them
  • If surrendering a single guinea pig, they must go to a home that already has a guinea pig companion unless it is in their best interest to be adopted as a single guinea pig for safety concerns.
  • We do not adopt to anyone under 18
  • We check enclosures, living conditions, and home environments before approving any adoption
  • All guinea pigs receive a health assessment and additional veterinary care if needed before being placed in a new home
